Teaching October Safety in Elementary

October is a fun and festive month, but it also comes with a unique set of safety concerns for students. Whether it is navigating dark streets, handling unfamiliar treats, dressing safely in costumes, or remembering school behavior expectations during all the excitement, October is the perfect time to review safety in a meaningful way.

As school counselors, we often face tight schedules and limited prep time. That is why I created the October Safety Bundle, a ready-to-use set of engaging, student friendly lessons and activities that help you teach safety concepts with ease and confidence.

Here is what is inside and how each piece supports your students in making safe choices throughout the month.

October Safety Classroom Lesson

This no-prep Google Slides™ lesson is an excellent way to introduce or revisit safety expectations with students in grades K through 3. It is ideal for use during Red Ribbon Week or anytime you need a seasonal safety refresher.

Students explore 20 real-world safety scenarios and decide whether each one is a "Safe or Scary Choice." Along the way, they build awareness and practice decision-making around topics such as:

  • Stranger safety

  • Traffic and pedestrian safety

  • Safe treats and food safety

  • Clothing and costume safety

  • Nighttime safety

Use it as a complete lesson or break it into smaller mini-lessons throughout October.

Color by October Safety Activities

These nine printable coloring pages combine creativity and safety education in one easy to use format. Each page uses a color-by-code system where students identify safe and unsafe choices.

These printables are perfect for:

  • Early finishers

  • Sub plans

  • Small groups or individual counseling

  • Classroom drop-offs during Red Ribbon Week

They require zero prep and give students a calming activity that still reinforces key safety messages.

October Safety Game Show

Wrap up your safety unit or kick things off with this interactive quiz style game. Available in PowerPoint and Google Slides formats, the game includes 25 multiple choice questions across five important safety categories:

  • Stranger Safety

  • Nighttime Safety

  • Treats and Food Safety

  • Clothing and Costume Safety

  • Traffic and Walking Safety

This game is best suited for grades 2 through 5 and works great for:

  • Whole class lessons

  • Counseling groups

  • Grade-level safety challenges

  • Classroom competitions

It is high-energy, interactive, and packed with meaningful questions that help students think critically about safety.
